Well basically I listen to the police/fire scanner
and when I hear something that may be news worthy go
out and video tape it. This was a very good way to
make extra income back in Milwaukee suburbs of
Waukesha County when I did this from 1991-1998. Then
after moving to Dallas in 1998 I found that the
market for stringer work was not the same as
Milwaukee. I was well know in Waukesha Country and
WISN Channel 12 would pretty much buy anything I
shot that was a good story. They liked using my
footage mainly because I was the only one running
around in Waukesha, including other stations and
they got many exclusive stores from me. Probably
ones that I should have made more money with, but it
was not my only job. I never had any problems with
the local police, this was because I used a Sony
semi-professional shoulder style camcorder. The few
times I just had a handheld camera I had mores
questions. Near my later years from 1997-1998 I used
a Sony EVW-300 3CCD Hi8 pro camcorder and did not
notice any different respect, but video quality was
much better for the news.
